The front cover of Lucy and the Polyclops: First Light by Owen Black. Lucy and Bubblegum, in a snowy forest at night, look up at a tiny blue star on the crater rim.

The second book in the series

First Light

Winter has come to Penumbra, and the snow lies deep at the bottom of the great crater.

Every morning, Bubblegum brings his best friend Lucy a flower. He is the only Polyclops anyone has ever seen.

Then one morning, Lucy isn’t there. Her mother has fallen sick, and nothing Lucy tries will make her well.

The old stories tell of a magical flower that blooms only at first light, high on the crater’s rim, where a tiny blue light shines like a star.

But there is no way up. Not yet.

Sometimes all it takes for a little magic is someone who believes in you.

Look inside

Pages 4 and 5. Every morning that winter, Lucy ran to the clearing after breakfast. Her friend Bubblegum was always there first, with a flower in his hands. She kept every one in jars on her windowsill. Opposite, Lucy runs through the snow toward Bubblegum, who holds out a glowing pink flower.
Pages 6 and 7. But then, three mornings passed without her. Bubblegum waited by the fallen tree. He brushed the snow from her picnic blanket and sat beside it until dark. Still she did not come. Opposite, Bubblegum waits alone by the snowy picnic blanket at dusk.
Pages 18 and 19. Bubblegum stood up before anyone could ask. Lucy stood beside him. “We will bring it home, Mommy.” Her mother held her close and looked at Bubblegum. “Bring her home.” So Lucy and Bubblegum set off into the snowy night, following the little blue star. Opposite, Lucy and Bubblegum step out of the open door into the snowy night, a little blue star glowing above.
